11/15/09 Kangaroo

Juliana got an echo this morning on her heart and they determined that her ductus has closed somewhat but is still open to a small to medium degree. This is down from the large opening she had before her dose. The attending and cardiologist decided that they would give her a third dose of the indomethacin and redo the echo on Wednesday. The medicine is less and less effective the older the baby, but I think because it worked to some extent this weekend, they want to give it another try. Depending on her echo on Wednesday, we would then discuss surgery if needed.

The exciting part of the day was that Jen got to hold her for the first time this afternoon. She held her for a little over an hour and Juliana was very stable the whole time. It was a very exciting time and one we hope to repeat each day that we can. I may get my chance later this evening, depending on her continued stability and progress. After Juliana was put back into her isolette, she settled down quickly and we were able to wean her oxygen down to 37%, the lowest in a long time. I think she felt good being held by her mother.

  1. How wonderful for you to hold Juliana today Jen! And for you to possibly get a chance to hold her later today, Jason. I pray it so! What a wonderful feeling to finally hold your baby girl. I wish I could have been there to witness that precious event. Such a beautiful gift! We will be praying that all goes well with that last dose and the ductus finally closes. Lord bless all that is done on Juliana’s behalf!

  2. Oh, what a special time that must have been. I’m so glad you were able to hold her, Jen. Hope you get to hold her tonight, Jason. We will keep praying for precious Juliana.

  3. I am SO happy Juliana did so well with Kangaroo care!! I know she loved it! My daughters vital signs were always better when I was holding her. I did it as much as I could. Usually twice a day, and then as she got bigger I held her all the time. That is such good news.:) We pray for Juliana all the time.

  4. God is awesome, wonderful, kind, gentle and most of all caring and compassionate. It is a wonder what He is doing in your family. Juliana is going to do much better when she has time near to Jen’s heartbeat…this is one of the first things she’s heard in her young life…and will always bring comfort to her. God continue to bless you!

  11. Laurie and I heard about this after the concert tonight from Laurie’s cousin Julia and from another person. So many people are following this story! We are so happy for you to have reached this turning point! God always meant for mommies and daddies to hold their babies, and I believe this can only help us get to the next milestone. You are in our prayers always.

  12. This is very exciting news! I am sure that the direct physical contact with her mother reaped benefits for Juliana. Ramona and I are firm believers in holding premies as much as possible, and we pray you are able to hold Juliana close to you on a daily basis over the next few weeks to aid her in her journey through the NICU experience. All three of you will continue to be in our prayers. Congratulations!
